What it is like

Gyotaku began in nineteenth-century Japan as a way for fishermen to record a catch before cameras: ink the fish, press paper to it, keep the print. The record turned into an art form.

It is one of the fastest routes to something you would actually frame. The fish does the drawing. The skill is in how little ink you use and how steadily you press.

Typical US prices for entry-level gear, rounded. Last checked October 2026. How we get the numbers

Your first project: a single black print

Step 1 Prepare the fish

Rinse off the slime, pat it completely dry and prop the fins open on bits of clay or cardboard.

Step 2 Ink it

A thin, even coat from head to tail, then a few strokes back toward the head to lift the scales.

Step 3 Press the paper

Lay the sheet on and rub gently with fingertips from the center outwards. Do not let it shift.

Step 4 Peel and paint the eye

Lift from one end in a single move. When dry, paint the eye in by hand.

Before you start

A fish printed with non-toxic water-based ink should still not be eaten afterwards unless the ink is labeled food-safe. Keep it cold while you work and wash hands and the table after handling raw fish.

Why people quit

  • A black blobToo much ink. The second and third pulls from the same inking are usually the best.
  • A wet fishWater repels the ink. Dry it more than seems necessary.
  • The wrong fishSoft, scaleless fish print as smears. Pick one with firm sides and clear scales.
